It could happen even to someone nice

“A person whose financial requirements are modest and whose curiosity, skepticism, and indifference to reputation are outsized is a person at risk of becoming a journalist.” — Louis Menand, “Browbeaten”

  1. Another word for the sensibility described is artist. And I’m not afraid or ashamed to call myself one.

  2. This is good. For reasons not worth going into here but not unlike many persons’ reasons, for a long time I had difficulty identifying myself as an artist. Add to that the perversion of American culture with its message that you’re not something unless it’s how you make your living. I prefer the Nietzschean stance.
