“I’ve been through more cold turkeys than there are freezers. I took the fucking hell week as a matter of course. I took it as being part of what I was into.” — Keith Richards, Life

I’ve never heard that song before tonight, but I liked it. In fact, I can’t say that I’m familiar with any of their songs other than the big hits. Is this a favorite of yours?
Yeah. That song’s been close to me all my adult life… “bein’ hungry, it ain’t no crime… comin’ down again… sky fall down again…”
The Stones’ back catalog is rich. What people are familiar with is such a small fragment of what they’ve done. Recordings that are in moods something similar to “Coming Down Again” are “Worried About You,” “Waiting on a Friend,” “Beast of Burden,” “Memory Motel,” “Till the Next Goodbye,” “Time Waits For No One,” “100 Years Ago,” “Winter,” “Torn and Frayed,” “Shine a Light,” “Sway,” “You Got the Silver,” and “Salt of the Earth.”
Yeah, that’s a lot of tracks. I can recommend any one of those without reservation. And many others besides, but others would be in different moods and tones from the ones I listed. I’m sure all of them are available on YouTube. How much poorer our lives would be without the Internet.
You’re right about that, the internet has added immensely to my life. I’m going to dig in. At the moment my favorite Stones song is “Wild Horses” but I can see it’s going to have some competition.
Thank you.
I left “Wild Horses” off the list I wrote last night because it is so well known, being one of their biggest hits, but thematically and tonally it fits in with the ones I listed. After I posted that list last night, I listened to a couple of them–“Worried About You” and “Memory Motel”–while I did a little bit of other work, and I think if I tried to listen to more than a couple at any one time, it would be like trying to have a big meal with only one course.
