You’re making me positively nostalgic. Did we really used to think of our government as helpful? Fair? Just? Right?
Yes, we did. We thought it could be and it should be. Then came empire and its burdens of self-deception. A nation such as ours was never meant to be an empire. The lies we’ve had to tell ourselves since the end of the Second World War have driven us crazy. The United States is the world’s largest open-air insane asylum.
